UALM stands by government in reaffirming Australia’s sovereignty over the forged passport issue

UALM: Australia’s Sovereignty must be respected Sydney, Australia: As the fallout over the alleged fake passport issue continues to grow, the United Australian Lebanese Movement (UALM) declares its support for the Australian Government in its quest to uncover the truth. The UALM hopes that the Israeli government, its officials and its agencies will fully co-operate with the Australian Federal Police in their investigation. We regard any involvement in the forged passport issue as a serious breach of Australia’s sovereignty. If any government and/or organisations are proven to be involved in this affair, we agree with the Australian government’s stance that these are not actions of a friend. These actions signify a total disregard and lack of respect for Australia and the Australian people. The UALM supports the stance taken by the Australian Foreign Minister, Mr Stephen Smith in relation to any refusal by any party to co-operate in the investigation. The UALM would support any response taken by the Australian government thereafter. The UALM is concerned by the ramifications of the misuse of Australian passports, as this is endangering every single Australian, as individuals carrying Australian passports in foreign countries, especially Middle Eastern countries will now be seen as potential threats and might be treated as spies or agents. Australians have always been highly regarded in the Middle East and the Australian Lebanese Community is a testament to this goodwill. We hope that this respect will result in Australian continuing to be seen as Ambassadors of goodwill in the region as citizens of a multicultural and tolerant society. The UALM always works very hard at fostering good relations between Australia, Lebanon and its neighbours and will follow this issue very closely and awaits the results of the Australian government’s investigation.
