UALM: Australian Lebanese community views permanent settlement of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon with fear.
For Immediate release
Melbourne, Victoria – The United Australian Lebanese Movement (UALM) held its Annual National Conference (ANC) of 2009 in the city of Melbourne on October 17th and 18th. Representatives and delegates from around Australia were present for the two day event.
For the duration of the ANC, many issues were discussed, debated and agreed upon in relation to UALM internal affairs and future vision. In particular, the topics addressed the challenges that face both Australia and Lebanon in relation international affairs.
Re-affirming Lebanon’s role as positive example for cooperation between civilizations, the following recommendations were formally issued at the end of the two day summit:
1. The Australian Lebanese community still views with trepidation the threat of permanent settlement of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon at the expense of the local indigenous population. We view that the resolution of the humanitarian tragedy that the Palestinian refugees are facing should not be at the expense of the Lebanese people. Therefore we call on all Lebanese political officials and groupings, government or otherwise, to take a united stand against settlement and to rally all diplomatic resources and all available means to ask the for the help of the Lebanese Diaspora; to bring to the attention of the international community the responsibility and duty of the international community to find a fair and humanitarian resolution to the issue of Palestinian refugees.
2. The UALM sees its role as being a bridge that connect people in Lebanon and Australia and provide mutual beneficial social, cultural, diplomatic, political and economic relations for both nations. The UALM strives to undertake activities to support the above mentioned position for we believe that Australia can be a great example for coexistence between communities and good example of democracy for Lebanon, while Lebanon can contribute both in spiritual and cultural values.
3. The UALM demands the right for the Diaspora to play an important role in Lebanese affairs in being able to vote in the places where they reside; and also encourages Australian Lebanese to support Lebanon via the election process.
4. The issue of the refugees is no longer a regional problem but rather and international problem; and we have seen in recent years Australia attempting to deal with the consequences of the refugee problem rather than the root cause. In that context we call on the Australia Government to take up its responsibility as part of the international community and seek ways to bring justice to the Palestinian refugees in Lebanon and find fair and humanitarian resolution to the crisis.
