UALM: The restoration of the Magen Abraham Synagogue is a positive step
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sydney, Australia: The United Australian Lebanese Movement (UALM) hails the announcement that the Magen Abraham synagogue in central Beirut is being restored. The restoration will come much to the pleasure of Lebanon's tiny Jewish community (estimated to be 300. It was 22 000 prior to the war in 1975).
Built in 1926, damaged by Israeli shells in the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon and vandalised by militias during the war. The temple was Lebanon’s oldest and most important synagogue.
A Talmud-Torah school that stood behind Magen Abraham was razed to the ground at the end of the war by Solidere, a private company owned by 5 time Prime Minister Rafic Hariri who during his term in office was responsible for the reconstruction of Beirut's city centre.
The UALM affirms that the announcement of the restoration and the subsequent reaction of the various religious and political groups is a valuable lesson to Lebanon's neighbours and the world that Lebanon is the epitome of coexistence and pluralism in the Middle East.
Isaac Arazi, president of the Lebanese Jewish Community Council Arazi said that none of Lebanon's religious communities and political parties, including Hezbollah, have expressed any reservations concerning the reconstruction project.
"Nobody has protested and we have not received any threats." He said.
Hussein Rahal, a spokesman for Hezbollah declared the party supports the restoration of Maghan Avraham saying “We respect the Jewish religion just like we do Christianity. The Jews have always lived among us. We have an issue with Israel's occupation of land”.
The UALM believes that the restoration of the Magen Abraham synagogue is a positive step and is proud that Lebanon is home to over 18 religious denominations. The UALM congratulates the Lebanese Jewish community on this wonderful initiative and looks forward to the opening of the Synagogue once again.
