UALM Commends Breakthrough in Terror Plot

UALM: We affirm that we find terrorist acts despicable

FOR IMMEDIATE RELASE

4/8/09

Sydney, Australia: The United Australian Lebanese
Movement (UALM) wholeheartedly supports all Australian State and
Federal Government agencies in their efforts to prevent terrorist
attacks from being carried out in Australia.

The UALM commends the work of the Australian Federal Police
(AFP), Victoria Police, NSW Police, the NSW Crime Commission and
Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) in the foiling
of a major terrorist plot planned for Australia.

The successful investigation and subsequent operation instil
confidence that we have as Australians in our law enforcement
agencies. They have shown that they are up to the task in defending
Australia from all threats both foreign and domestic.

The UALM calls on the Australian Government to ensure that
all those convicted of involvement in any terrorist activity are
severely dealt with. There should be no leniency given to those who
wish to strike at Australia or its people.

The Australian-Lebanese community understands full well the
threat of terrorism and how terrorism can have an adverse affect on
peoples lives. Many members of the Australian-Lebanese community have
been victims of terrorists and their cowardly attacks. We affirm that
we find terrorist acts despicable. Terror and violence in all its
forms have no place in Australia.

Australia and Lebanon share a common bond in their aspirations to preserve Free and Democratic ideals and the UALM would not like to see Australia subjected to the same fate as Lebanon when terrorism arrived to its shores many decades ago. The latest of which was the 3 month battle in 2007 between the Lebanese Army and Al Qaeda inspired militants in the Naher al Bared Palestinian Refugee camp in Lebanons North.

The UALM, which enjoys large support across the
Australian-Lebanese community calls on the public and especially the
Australian-Lebanese community to help in the fight against terrorism.
The public is asked report anything suspicious; while this sounds
simple it is in fact playing an integral part in ensuring that
terrorist attacks occurring on Australian soil or against Australian
civilians is evaded.

We can all contribute to the safety and well-being of our
fellow Australians. The UALM urges anyone with information they
believe may be related to national security to contact the National
Security Hotline on 1800 123 400 or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
